How Networking Can Change Your Life
Networking is One of the Most Effective Ways to Build Your Brand
Networking is key…Most people who have built and sold successful companies will tell you this. Without the proper networking skills, founders can miss out on partnerships or investments. When at a conference, dinner, trade show, or even on the street, networking is used by many, as a way to connect and build a rolodex of relationships that can serve to be instrumental in building a successful business. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to network. Distinguishing the difference between both ways can make or break a connection. So make sure to pay attention.
Do your research…Know who you want to meet before you go to an event. Do not go in blind but most definitely keep an open mind, as you never know who you may run into. Make a list of those you plan on speaking to and learn a little bit about them. If they are from a certain area, maybe they like a local sports team? This leads to the next key tip.
“Ice ice baby”…Always start with an icebreaker. This will make both you and whoever you are speaking with more comfortable. Do not be corny but definitely try and be genuine rather than leading straight to business.
It’s all about timing … No one wants to be bothered while eating dinner or whilst having a private conversation. So when at an event, you must make sure the timing is correct. Find a time when the person is free and approach them politely.
If it ain't broke, dont fix it…Cards may be old school, but they make an impact. Big time executives have a lot on their mind so make sure to leave them a card so that they have your info.
LinkedIn works…Connect with people on LinkedIn. Either before or after you meet them. This makes for a way to do research and already have a connection either before or after actually meeting them. LinkedIn is also a way to reach people you may not see in person. Do not be generic or send anyone a copy & paste message, rather try and be personable and respectful.
Here is an example of a LinkedIn message that displays politeness and expresses interests in learning about the other person:
Be confident…The attitude and mindset going into any conversation or pitch makes all the difference. Usually, the confidence is what will propel you to true success. Imagine somebody you do not know is pitching you their idea and you can hear in their voice that they have no confidence whatsoever. Would you write them a check? Maybe…if their idea is really that good. But you would certainly have doubts right off the bat. Do not give people doubts right away. Be confident in what you do and who you are.
Be useful…Part of networking is finding value in one another. It should not be a one-way street. Do your best to find value and provide it to whoever asks. Whether it be an intro, taking a call, or providing unique feedback. Find where you can add value and this will go a long way later on.
Last but not least, be nice…This should not have to be said. But unfortunately, seems to be forgotten too often. Create a genuine relationship with people, treat them nicely, and they will start introducing you to people without you asking. This is how life works. Never look at someone and ignore them. Always go into conversations with a positive mindset and you may accidentally run into your next investor.
